Staying Active Over the Holiday Season

It’s that time of year again! The end of year holiday season is a pretty crazy, busy and stressful time for just about everyone, and sometimes that means your exercise and recovery might be pushed to the back of the priority list. But, it can also mean you’re more likely to burn yourself out with how busy you are. There’s a fine line between staying active and overdoing it in the holiday period, which is why we’ve put together some tips to help you stay active over the festive season – keep reading to find out more.

1. Set Realistic Expectations

Your schedule is going to be different over the holidays, and you’ll most likely be busier than you are during the rest of the year. It’s important to set realistic, and possibly lower, expectations than what you might set for yourself during the rest of the year. While you might be able to consistently stick to your training routine and diet during the rest of the year, you may not be able to over the holidays – and that’s completely okay.

2. Keep it Short and Simple

You’ll probably be a bit time-poor over the Christmas and New Year period, so it’s best to keep your workouts short if you can. Go for a walk or a jog, set aside 20 minutes for a yoga session in the morning, or take your weights out for half an hour in the evening.

3. Schedule in Your Workouts

Set aside time to exercise as often as you’d like around your holiday schedule – if you find the best times in advance to train it should be easier to consistently commit to your exercise.

4. Don’t Push Too Hard

If you’re finding yourself feeling fatigued or run down over the festive season, it’s okay to take some time off of training. It’s a very stressful time of year, and this can affect our body more than we think. While you may want to continue training, the holiday period can actually be a great time to let your body rest and recover from an intense year. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking this time off, and allowing yourself to start fresh in the New Year. This decision is completely up to you – listen to your body and train or rest accordingly.
